Overview

Located in Kofucho, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, Amataki Falls is a magnificent waterfall selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, captivating visitors with its impressive scale and powerful water flow. This 40-meter waterfall cascades down from Mount Ogosen, flowing from the Fukurogawa River, nestled within a lush natural environment surrounded by a primeval forest. The beauty of Amataki Falls extends beyond its sheer power; the surrounding nature is equally enchanting. The Amataki Valley boasts 48 waterfalls of varying sizes, a true treasure trove of nature. Towering Japanese horse chestnut, zelkova, and beech trees create a verdant canopy, and the autumn foliage is particularly stunning, with the trees ablaze in red and yellow hues, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Spring offers equally beautiful scenery, with the fresh green of the valley perfect for a relaxing stroll. Amataki Falls has been revered as a sacred site for ascetic practices and religious faith since ancient times. While the 'Otaki Mairi' pilgrimage, traditionally held on the first day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, is no longer practiced, a 'Takibirasai' (waterfall opening festival) is held annually on the first Saturday and Sunday of June. This festival prays for good fortune and features vibrant local traditional performances such as the 'Inaba no kasa odori' (Inaba umbrella dance) and sacred rituals. In October 2010, when the San'in Kaigan Geopark was recognized as a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, Amataki Falls, located within the Mount Ogosen area, was highlighted as a valuable geological feature. The area around the falls is well-maintained, offering easy access via walkways and rest areas. Ample parking is also available, making it convenient for those traveling by car. Amataki Falls is a highly recommended tourist spot, allowing you to experience the grandeur of nature and refresh your mind.
