Overview

Misasa Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Misasa-cho, Tohaku-gun, Tottori Prefecture. It's a historic onsen town that has thrived as a spa destination for centuries. The spring boasts one of the world's highest radon concentrations, a radioactive hot spring known for its effectiveness in treating neuralgia, muscle pain, and poor circulation, making it a beloved spot for many throughout history. According to legend, Misasa Onsen was discovered in the Heian period by Ōkubo Sama no Suke, a vassal of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. While visiting Sandokusan Sanbutsuji Temple, he encountered an aged white wolf. He initially intended to kill it, but refrained, realizing it might be a divine being. That night, Myōken Daibosatsu appeared in his dreams, guiding him to the hot spring. Following the directions, he found a spring bubbling up at the base of an old camphor tree. The name of the Misasa Onsen spring, 'Kabuyu', is said to originate from this story. The onsen town features charming streets lined with Ryokans and restaurants along the Sandoku River. Historic bridges like the Misasa Bridge, Kajika Bridge, and Koiya Bridge add to the picturesque atmosphere. Surrounding Misasa Onsen are numerous attractions, including Sandokusan Sanbutsuji Temple, home to the nationally important cultural property, the Tosshin-do (a temple hall built into a cliff face), and Kojika Valley, a scenic area designated as a place of national scenic beauty. Sandokusan Sanbutsuji Temple, situated high on a mountain at 900 meters above sea level, houses the Tosshin-do, known as "Japan's most dangerous national treasure" due to its precarious cliffside location. Kojika Valley showcases the beautiful scenery of the Sandoku River valley flowing down from Sandokusan, featuring various waterfalls and unique rock formations. Misasa Onsen is the perfect destination for a rejuvenating hot spring getaway, offering relaxation and a chance to immerse yourself in beautiful scenery and delicious cuisine. Indulge in a luxurious escape and create unforgettable memories.
