Tottori Sand Dunes is a stunning sand dune, one of Japan's most iconic, where wind and sand create breathtaking scenery. Enjoy the majestic patterns of the sand, the bowl-shaped terrain, and the diverse landscapes.
Tottori Sand Dunes are Japan's leading coastal sand dunes, stretching along the Sea of Japan coast in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. Spanning 16 km east-west and 2.4 km north-south, approximately 146 hectares of its central area are designated as a national natural monument—the only coastal sand dunes in Japan to receive this honor. The sand of Tottori Sand Dunes is formed from weathered granite rocks from the Chugoku Mountains, transported by the Chiyogawa River to the Sea of Japan and then deposited on the coast. The current form of Tottori Sand Dunes is the result of a long process, shaped by ocean currents bringing sand towards the shore and prevailing winds blowing the accumulated sand inland. The allure of Tottori Sand Dunes lies in its dynamic landscape, a masterpiece of wind and sand. The "wind patterns"—ripple marks sculpted by the wind—are renowned for their beauty, captivating numerous photographers and artists. The breathtaking "sand curtains," formed by cascading sand, and the dramatic bowl-shaped depressions—"suribachi"—are unique landforms created by wind and sand, and leave a lasting impression. At Tottori Sand Dunes, you can enjoy camel rides, paragliding, sandboarding, and other activities. From the top of the dunes, you'll have panoramic views of the vast Sea of Japan. Walking across the sand dunes feels like stepping into a desert. The surrounding area also offers attractions such as the "Sand Museum," showcasing sand sculptures, and the "Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center," where you can learn about the area’s natural beauty and history. Tottori Sand Dunes offer a truly awe-inspiring experience of nature's grandeur and unique activities, making it a must-see destination in Japan.
