Overview

Kouzenji Temple is a distinguished branch temple of the Tendai sect located in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture. Its mountain name is Hojaku-zan. It's counted among the five great mountains of Shinano and is also known for the legend of Hayataro, the spirit dog. The legend of Hayataro, the spirit dog, is told throughout Kouzenji and various other locations. While the story's structure is typical, Hayataro's name varies depending on the region; in Komagane, he's also known as Hayate Taro. Kouzenji Temple is renowned for its gardens, designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty. Visitors can enjoy magnificent landscapes, including the Rankkei Doryu-style pond garden and the築山式枯山水 (tsukuyamasiki kare sansui) dry landscape garden. Furthermore, Hikari-goke (luminescent moss) grows naturally within the temple grounds, creating a magical atmosphere.
