Oubaiin Temple's weeping cherry tree is a magnificent crimson weeping cherry tree, estimated to be over 400 years old, located at Oubaiin Temple, a Soto Zen Buddhist temple in Edomachi, Iida City, Nagano Prefecture. Designated a natural monument of Iida City, this cherry tree captivates visitors with its blossoms of a deep crimson hue. The temple itself was founded in 1582 (Tensho 10) in Shimatamura (present-day Matsuo, Iida City). Legend says it was built as a memorial temple for Oubaiin-hime, the daughter of Takeda Shingen and his wife, Sanjo no Kata. It's also said that the temple was relocated to its current location by order of the Iida castle lord, Wakisaka. The weeping cherry tree at Oubaiin Temple has become a symbolic presence in Iida City, heralding the arrival of spring. During cherry blossom season, many people visit to revel in its beauty.
