Overview

Josho-ji Temple is a historic temple located in Suhara-juku, a prosperous post town along the Kiso Road. Founded in the Kakei era (1387-1388), it's known as one of the Kiso Sanji temples. Its mountain gate, main hall, and storehouse, designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, vividly showcase the characteristics of Momoyama culture and preserve the architectural style of that era. The harmonious blend of white walls and black woodwork in the main hall and storehouse especially highlights the advanced construction techniques of the time, captivating visitors. The temple grounds feature a beautiful garden centered around a pond, ablaze with weeping cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in the fall. The tranquil atmosphere provides a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Josho-ji also houses precious treasures reflecting its rich history, including a memorial tablet for Kiso Yoshimasa and a large seated Daruma statue carved from Kiso cedar.
