A beautiful shrine nestled in a tranquil forest. Its unique architectural style, featuring paired side halls (kata-haiden), is a must-see.
Suwa Taisha Shrine, Lower Shrine Harumiya, is located in Shimosuwa-machi, Suwa-gun, Nagano Prefecture, on the southern shore of Lake Suwa. It's one of the four shrines that comprise the Lower Shrine of Suwa Taisha. Harumiya Shrine boasts a beautiful precinct surrounded by a serene forest, offering a calming experience for visitors. It's renowned for its unique architectural style, featuring paired side halls (kata-haiden) on either side of the main hall. It is said that Harumiya and Akimiya Shrines were built from the same blueprints, showcasing a competition of superb carving techniques. The sacred sugi (cedar) tree serves as Harumiya's sacred tree, complementing the yew tree at Akimiya, creating a sacred space. The grounds also feature a kagura hall (sacred dance hall) and a heihaiden (offering hall), offering plenty to see. Harumiya Shrine is truly a power spot, enveloped in a sacred atmosphere and beautiful nature. When visiting Harumiya Shrine, we recommend also seeing the Manji Stone Buddhas nearby, said to grant wishes. A short walk from Harumiya Shrine leads to the Shimosuwa hot spring town, where you can enjoy onsen (hot springs). Shimosuwa offers historic inns and restaurants, allowing you to soak in the atmosphere of the onsen town. Exploring Suwa Taisha Shrine, Lower Shrine Harumiya and its surrounding area is sure to refresh your mind and body.
