Jion-ji Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture. In 724, Gyoki presented the Emperor Shomu with a proposal highlighting the scenic beauty of this location. Tradition holds that in 746, it was founded by a Brahmin priest from India at the Emperor's behest. During the Heian period, it was designated a Go-on-ji (temple with imperial patronage) by Emperor Toba. In the Kamakura period, it is said to have had close ties with the local lord, Oe Hiromoto. During the Edo period, owing to its status as a Chogan-ji (temple receiving imperial patronage), it received vast temple lands from the shogunate and served as a temple dedicated to protecting the nation.
