Jyogge Nyorai Saihoji Temple is a beloved power spot for Sendai residents. Believed to bless couples with marital bliss and expectant mothers with safe childbirth, it attracts many couples and families.
Jyogge Nyorai Saihoji Temple is a Jodo sect Buddhist temple located in Aoba-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. While its formal name is rarely used, it's generally referred to as Jyogge Nyorai (Jyōge Nyorai). Affectionately called "Jyōge-san" by Sendai locals, it's a popular spot attracting approximately one million tourists annually. The temple holds a legend of Taira refugees, stating that Taira Sadayoshi (Higo no Kami), a high-ranking retainer of Taira Shigemori, hid in this area after the Battle of Dan-no-ura. It is said that Sadayoshi enshrined Amitabha Buddha, praying for the repose of Emperor Antoku and the Taira clan, and changed his name to "Jyōge." The local area also came to be called "Jyōge" (Jōge) and "Jōge" (Jōge) due to the pronunciation of "Jyōge". The temple grounds boast many attractions, including a five-storied pagoda and beautiful gardens. The "Tennozuka" (Emperor's Mound), particularly popular among couples and families, is believed to grant blessings of marital bliss and safe childbirth. Legend says that after burying Emperor Antoku's belongings and planting two zelkova trees as grave markers, they eventually grew into a single tree. Jyogge Nyorai Saihoji Temple also offers activities such as prayer bead making and nighttime illuminations of the gardens, making it enjoyable year-round. The temple town boasts numerous shops selling "sankaku aburage," a local specialty and perfect souvenir. Sankaku aburage is deep-fried tofu cut into triangles, a delicacy unique to the Jyogge Nyorai Saihoji Temple area. Jyogge Nyorai Saihoji Temple is a place of healing for both body and mind, surrounded by history and nature. We highly recommend a visit.
