Mizu no Machiya Nanoka Machi Gotenzeki is a commercial facility in Nanoka Machi, Yamagata City, developed in 2010 around Gotenzeki, one of the "Yamagata Gozeki" (five irrigation canals) built approximately 400 years ago. Originally, Yamagata Castle lord Torii Tadamasu constructed several weirs in the upper reaches of Mamigatake to secure water for the castle town and agricultural use in the surrounding villages. These became known as "Yamagata Gozeki," with Gotenzeki being one of them. Gotenzeki still flows through the heart of Nanoka Machi today, creating a charming landscape steeped in history. Mizu no Machiya Nanoka Machi Gotenzeki, built around this historic waterway, is a commercial complex with unique shops forming a retro-modern townscape. Stroll along the waterway, enjoying a leisurely walk while taking in the traditional streetscape. Nearby, you'll find numerous historical structures, including the remains of Yamagata Castle and the Banshokan, offering opportunities to delve into history and culture. Take a break at a cafe or restaurant, pick up some souvenirs, and simply enjoy your time. Come experience the blend of history and culture, and find a tranquil moment at Mizu no Machiya Nanoka Machi Gotenzeki.
