Overview

Hataya Castle is a mountain castle built on a hilltop approximately 380 meters above sea level in Shirataka-machi, Yamagata Prefecture. Legend says it was constructed during the late Kamakura period by Mogami Yoshimitsu, an ancestor of the powerful Mogami clan. Yoshimitsu later built Yamagata Castle and unified the Ou region, becoming a prominent warlord of the Sengoku period. Hataya Castle played a crucial role as one of the strongholds during the Mogami clan's rise to power in the Ou region. While only parts of the stone walls and earthworks remain today, they evoke the grandeur of the former castle and offer a captivating glimpse into its historical significance. From the castle ruins, you can enjoy breathtaking natural scenery and feel the weight of history. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, and autumn brings a stunning display of autumn foliage. Enjoy the ever-changing beauty of the seasons. The surrounding area also boasts pleasant walking paths where you can immerse yourself in Shirataka-machi's rich natural environment, as well as local shops offering delicious regional specialties. Be sure to visit Hataya Castle during your trip to Shirataka-machi!
