Overview

Hiji-ori Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Oaza Mura, Yamagata Prefecture, nestled in the foothills of Mount Gassan at an elevation of approximately 700 meters. Boasting a history of over 1200 years, it has thrived as a spa town since ancient times. Legend has it that its discovery dates back to the Heian period, when a man named Gen'o visited the area and was instructed in its use by an old monk. The story goes that Gen'o had broken his elbow, and the monk directed him to the onsen for healing; hence the name Hiji-ori Onsen (Hiji-ori meaning "broken elbow"). Hiji-ori Onsen is renowned for its hot springs fed directly from the source. The water is a weakly alkaline simple hot spring, believed to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, and poor circulation. The onsen town also features public bathhouses, footbaths, and souvenir shops, providing ample opportunities for leisurely strolls. Hiji-ori Onsen retains a strong atmosphere of a traditional spa town, offering a tranquil escape for relaxation. It's the perfect destination for those seeking to unwind and soak in the onsen away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Its convenient location also provides easy access to Mount Gassan and nearby attractions, making it ideal for nature and history enthusiasts. When visiting Hiji-ori Onsen, be sure to explore the charming streets. Enjoy the atmosphere by visiting public bathhouses, footbaths, and souvenir shops. Consider extending your trip to hike Mount Gassan or visit other nearby attractions.
