Experience the abundant nature of this park, almost unbelievable for being within Sapporo city limits, and enjoy the scenery throughout the four seasons.
Nishi-oka Park is a naturally rich park located in Toyohira-ku, Sapporo. Centered around the former Nishi-oka Water Source Pond, created by damming the Tsukihanagawa River, the park is a popular spot for birdwatching and nature observation. Visitors can observe plants and creatures throughout the year. The wetlands are home to plants such as skunk cabbage (Mizubashou), and depending on the season, fireflies (Heike-botaru) and dragonflies can also be seen. Well-maintained walking paths make for pleasant strolls. Children's play equipment and open spaces make it enjoyable for families. Nishi-oka Park boasts a rich history. The former Nishi-oka Water Source Pond, built during the Meiji period as a military water supply, is the third oldest water intake facility in Hokkaido after Hakodate and Iwamisawa. With the completion of the Shirakawa Water Purification Plant in 1971 and the Hoppyo Dam the following year, the Nishi-oka Water Purification Plant was decommissioned and transformed into the park. The former Nishi-oka Water Source Pond's intake tower is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, offering a blend of historical significance and natural beauty. Despite its easy access from central Sapporo, Nishi-oka Park retains an abundance of natural beauty. It's the perfect place for those seeking a relaxing escape from the urban hustle and bustle to fully immerse themselves in nature.
