Completed in 1972, Hoheikyo Dam is a 102.5-meter-high arch-type concrete dam. It serves as a crucial water resource for Sapporo City, managing flood control, supplying municipal water, and generating hydroelectric power. The reservoir, Lake Jozan, is situated within the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, boasting a magnificent landscape surrounded by mountains. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, lush greenery fills the summer, and autumn paints the mountainsides in vibrant reds and yellows. The area offers beautiful scenery year-round.
Well-maintained walking paths, observation decks, and a rest house allow visitors to fully enjoy the abundant natural beauty. The paths wind along the reservoir, offering picturesque lake views. From the observation decks, you can take in panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The rest house provides a place to rest and grab a bite to eat.
You can also collect a dam card here – a commemorative item distributed at dam management offices, a prized collectible for dam enthusiasts.
Hoheikyo Dam is a captivating tourist spot where nature and technology harmoniously blend. Be sure to visit if you're in Sapporo!
