A garden where you can enjoy the seasonal beauty of approximately 3,000 Onko (Japanese Yew) trees and 700-800 maple trees of 8 varieties.
Hiraoka Jugei Center is a botanical garden located in Kiyota-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, offering a tranquil escape surrounded by abundant nature and greenery. Originally, it was established in 1984 with a donation of land and trees from the late Sanjiro Takesawa, who had cultivated a model garden of trees suitable for northern climates. The garden features approximately 3,000 Onko (Japanese Yew) trees and 700-800 maple trees of eight varieties, showcasing beautiful seasonal scenery. The Onko trees, particularly stunning in June with their fresh green buds, range from neatly trimmed spheres to hedges, creating a gradient of green that soothes the soul. In autumn, the maples burst into vibrant hues of red, yellow, and orange, painting the garden in spectacular fall colors. The approximately 150-meter-long row of Nomura maple trees is especially breathtaking and attracts many visitors. The Hiraoka Jugei Center also boasts a traditional Japanese garden with a pond, gazebo, and other serene elements, providing a tranquil space for relaxation. Furthermore, a "Gardening Consultation Office" offers a green consultation corner, lecture hall, exhibition room, and library, playing a vital role in promoting citizen gardening. You can find information on gardening consultations and events here. The Hiraoka Jugei Center is a multifaceted botanical garden where you can immerse yourself in nature, unwind, and learn; a place you should definitely visit.
