The Kyu-Endo Family Residence is a thatched-roof farmhouse located at a key point along the Rokujurigoe Kaido, a historical road connecting the Shonai region and the inland Murayama region. It's a prime example of the *kabuto-zukuri* multi-storied farmhouse, a unique architectural style of this region, offering a glimpse into life during the Meiji era (1868-1912). The architectural style, reflecting the ingenuity of a heavy-snow region, is a valuable record of the lifestyle of the time. For example, the roof structure is robustly built to withstand the weight of the snow. The interior walls are thick, and the windows are small to keep out the cold. Traditional heating appliances such as a fireplace and an *irori* (traditional sunken hearth) are also on display. Visiting the Kyu-Endo Family Residence allows you to experience Meiji-era life and learn about the history and culture of the Rokujurigoe Kaido, an important road that supported the lives of people for generations. The historical buildings and sites scattered along the road tell the story of the era's lifestyle and culture. The Kyu-Endo Family Residence is a precious place to learn about the history and culture of the Rokujurigoe Kaido. Be sure to visit!
