Kaminoyama Castle, once the seat of the Kaminoyama domain, is now beautifully maintained as Tsukioka Park. It features a three-story replica keep that houses a local history museum.
Kaminoyama Castle is a castle ruin located in Kaminoyama City, Yamagata Prefecture. It once served as the seat of the Kaminoyama domain, with a history stretching back to the Nanboku-chō period. Built on a hilltop approximately 100 meters above sea level, this flatland castle was surrounded by deep moats. The castle grounds included the honmaru (main enclosure), ninomaru (second enclosure), and sannomaru (third enclosure). During the Sengoku period, Kaminoyama Castle became a focal point in the power struggles between the Mogami, Date, Tendō, and other clans. In the Edo period, it became the seat of the Kaminoyama domain, leading to the development of a castle town. Following the Meiji Restoration and the abolition of the feudal system, the castle was abandoned, but its grounds were later developed into a park, now known as Tsukioka Park. A three-story replica keep stands within Tsukioka Park, housing a local history museum showcasing exhibits on the history and culture of Kaminoyama Castle. The park also boasts beautiful cherry blossom trees, ponds, and other features, offering stunning seasonal views. In spring, approximately 1,500 cherry trees bloom, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Kaminoyama Castle is a highly recommended spot for a historical stroll. The park also includes shops and restaurants, making it a great place to spend a whole day.
