A park developed on the site of Yamagata Castle, boasting approximately 1,500 cherry blossoms in spring, making it Yamagata City's premier cherry blossom viewing spot.
Kajo Park is a city park located in the heart of Yamagata City, developed on the site of Yamagata Castle. Yamagata Castle was built by Mogami Yoshiaki, a warlord of the Sengoku period. It was also called "Kasuga-jo" (Castle in the Mist) because during the "Hasedō Battle," a battle considered the Dewa's Sekigahara, the castle was hidden by mist. Today, remnants of the castle, including stone walls and moats, remain in the park, allowing visitors to experience a piece of history. In spring, approximately 1,500 cherry trees burst into bloom, painting the entire park in shades of pink. During the cherry blossom season, the park is illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere. The park also features cultural facilities like the Yamagata Prefectural Museum and the Yamagata City Museum of Local History, offering a blend of history and nature. Kajo Park is one of Yamagata City's leading tourist attractions, beloved by many.
