Known as the inner sanctuary of the Devasan Mountains, this sacred site is said to be where ascetics who trained on Gassan and Haguroyama attained Buddhahood.
Overview
Yudono-san Shrine is located at the summit of Yudono-san, one of the three sacred mountains of Devasan. At an elevation of 1,504 meters, Yudono-san is connected to Gassan and has been a sacred site for Shugendo ascetic practices since ancient times. Called the inner sanctuary of the Devasan Mountains, Yudono-san Shrine is believed to be the place where ascetics who trained on Gassan and Haguroyama attained Buddhahood. The shrine is nestled within a gorge carved by the Bonji River, creating a tranquil space surrounded by nature. Yudono-san Shrine is said to offer various blessings, including bountiful harvests and household safety. It also serves as a trailhead for climbing Mount Gassan, attracting many hikers. Deeply rooted in nature worship, the shrine lacks a traditional building; nature itself is revered as a sacred place. Visitors are thus immersed in the sacred atmosphere of the natural surroundings. When visiting Yudono-san Shrine, please show respect for nature and observe quiet contemplation.
