Kyushu's largest caldera lake! The azure waters, the majestic Kaimon-dake volcano, and the seasonal flowers create a breathtaking view.
Overview
Lake Ikeda is the largest lake in Kyushu, formed approximately 6,400 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption. Its crystal-clear azure waters are exceptionally beautiful. The lakeshore explodes with seasonal flowers; cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, autumn leaves in fall – offering stunning scenery year-round. The view of Kaimon-dake volcano across the lake is particularly magnificent and breathtaking. Known as the 'Satsuma Fuji,' its majestic presence enhances Lake Ikeda's beauty. The lake is also home to giant eels, reaching lengths of 2 meters and girths of 50 centimeters. These eels have been part of local folklore for generations, and some even whisper they might be the legendary cryptid, 'Isshy,' adding to the lake's allure. Lake Ikeda is a must-see Kagoshima tourist spot, a stunning blend of majestic nature and enigmatic legend.
