Bus stop: Just past the Lava Observatory.
The Arimuma Lava Observatory is one of Sakurajima's premier sightseeing spots, situated on the Taisho lava flow at the foot of Minamidake volcano. From here, a breathtaking panorama unfolds: a sprawling lava field punctuated by resilient Japanese black pines, all overlooking the magnificent Kinko Bay. On a clear day, you can even spot the distant Kaimon-dake volcano.
A roughly one-kilometer-long walking path winds through the area, offering a chance to fully appreciate Sakurajima's natural beauty. Along the path, you'll find numerous poems and songs inscribed on stone monuments, making for a pleasant literary stroll. Keep an eye out for Lion Rock, a uniquely shaped lava formation along the path!
Near the parking lot, you'll find a souvenir shop offering Sakurajima specialties. Choose from unique items like Sakurajima lava spa products or Sakurajima T-shirts. Chatting with the shopkeepers is a great way to learn more about Sakurajima.
The Arimuma Lava Observatory offers the unparalleled opportunity to witness the grandeur of Sakurajima's nature and the beauty of Kinko Bay simultaneously. Don't miss it during your visit to Sakurajima!
