Overview

Ryuoukyo Gorge is a scenic area located in the upper reaches of the Kinugawa River in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and is part of Nikko National Park. Formed over countless years by the erosion of the Kinugawa River, this majestic gorge is characterized by a variety of uniquely shaped rock formations and cascading waterfalls. The name Ryuoukyo (Dragon King Gorge) was given in 1950, as the scenery resembles a dragon sprawling across the landscape. The gorge is further divided into three sections based on rock type and color: Byouryuukyo (White Dragon Gorge), Seiryukyo (Blue Dragon Gorge), and Shiryukyo (Purple Dragon Gorge). Byouryuukyo, characterized by its prominent rhyolite, features numerous waterfalls such as Nijimi-no-taki (Rainbow Waterfall), Koto-no-taki (Harp Waterfall), and Byouryuuga-fuchen (White Dragon Pond). Seiryukyo, primarily composed of tuff, is known for its distinctive columnar jointed rocks, Shishiiwa (Lion Rock), and Shiroiwa (White Rock). Shiryukyo, mainly consisting of andesite, displays rugged exposed bedrock, testament to the power of the forces that shaped it. Ryuoukyo boasts well-maintained walking paths, perfect for a relaxing nature walk. The view from the Musasabi Bridge is particularly renowned for offering a stunning perspective on the gorge's grandeur. Known for its seasonal beauty, Ryuoukyo offers breathtaking sights throughout the year. Spring brings vibrant greenery, summer offers refreshing breezes, autumn displays fiery foliage, and winter paints a magical snowy landscape. It's a place that captivates visitors throughout the year. Ryuoukyo Gorge is a wonderful tourist spot where you can feel the raw power of nature. Be sure to visit!
