Senjogahara, a classic Nikko sightseeing spot, offers breathtaking natural beauty and stunning scenery throughout the four seasons.
Senjogahara is a vast, 400-hectare wetland stretching across a flat area at an altitude of 1390 to 1400 meters in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. This popular sightseeing spot boasts a breathtaking natural landscape, featuring the majestic Mount Nantai, surrounding mountains, and the Yukawa River, reflecting the blue sky. Senjogahara was formed approximately 20,000 years ago when a volcanic eruption of Mount Nantai dammed the Yukawa River, creating a dammed lake. Over time, sediment and volcanic ejecta accumulated, vegetation grew, and under the cool climate, peat formed, creating the wetland. Well-maintained wooden walkways crisscross the expansive wetland, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the diverse natural beauty of each season. Spring sees an explosion of alpine flowers like Mizubashou (Skunk Cabbage) and Ryukin-ka (Globe Flower), transforming Senjogahara into a vibrant flower garden. Early summer brings lush greenery, offering a refreshing display of vibrant new foliage. Autumn paints the mountains with fiery reds, yellows, and oranges, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Winter blankets the landscape in snow, inviting visitors to enjoy the serenity of a snow-covered wonderland, a scene of ethereal beauty. Senjogahara is a popular destination for hikers and trekkers, offering various trails for all experience levels, from beginner-friendly paths to more challenging routes for advanced hikers. The area around Senjogahara also boasts a wealth of onsen (hot springs) and accommodations, making it ideal for a relaxing stay. Senjogahara offers a chance to experience the grandeur of nature and find peace and tranquility. Be sure to visit!
