Overview

Lake Chuzenji is a dammed lake formed approximately 20,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption of Mount Nantai. Known as Japan's highest lake (excluding artificial lakes), it sits at an elevation of 1,269m. The stunning contrast between its majestic natural beauty and crystal-clear waters makes it a worthwhile destination year-round, offering spring greenery, refreshing summer breezes, autumn foliage, and a winter wonderland. Along the lakeshore, you'll find historical and cultural spots such as the Nikko Futarasan Shrine Chuzenji branch and Nikko Chuzenji Temple. The Nikko Futarasan Shrine Chuzenji branch enshrines Mount Nantai as its sacred object and is revered as the guardian deity of Lake Chuzenji. Nikko Chuzenji Temple, founded in 782 by Shodo Shonin, features the iconic "Tachiki Kannon" statue standing by the lake. Lake Chuzenji also offers various activities, including landlocked salmon fishing and boat tours. Landlocked salmon is a local specialty, attracting many anglers and those seeking fresh seafood. Boat tours provide breathtaking views of the lake, particularly stunning during the autumn foliage season when the lake is surrounded by vibrant colors. Lake Chuzenji is a captivating destination blending nature, history, and leisure. It's perfect for anyone seeking majestic natural beauty, historical and cultural immersion, or an active getaway.
