Overview

Lake Chuzenji is a dammed lake formed approximately 20,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption of Mount Nantai. Known as Japan's highest lake (excluding artificial lakes), it sits at an elevation of 1,269m. Nikko Chuzenji Temple, founded in 782 by Shodo Shonin, features the iconic "Tachiki Kannon" statue standing by the lake.
