Gyokusen-ji Temple is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Tamagawa, Haguro-machi, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture.
It is said to have been founded around 700 years ago during the Kamakura period (1251) by Rōzen Hōmyō Zenji, a senior disciple of Dōgen Zenji, the founder of Soto Zen Buddhism.
Nestled at the foot of the Dewa Sanzan mountains, Gyokusen-ji Temple is blessed with a rich natural environment.
Its pond garden, designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty, is a major highlight. Created in the Muromachi period and renovated in the Edo period, this stroll garden offers breathtaking views throughout the year.
