Honma Family's Villa Garden, Tsurumaien, located in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a picturesque garden with Mount Chokai as its stunning backdrop. Built during the Edo period by the Honma family, the lords of Sakata Domain, it's a meticulously designed stroll garden. The garden features ponds, waterfalls, artificial hills, and offers breathtaking views throughout the year. The Seienkaku, a building offering panoramic views of the garden, is particularly noteworthy. The second-floor rooms, once graced by the presence of Emperor Showa, boast unique and intriguing furnishings. Tsurumaien was created in 1806 by Mitsumichi Honma, the fourth head of the Honma family, a known cultural figure who poured his passion into the garden's design. Legend says that the garden was named Tsurumaien (Crane Dance Garden) after a crane was seen descending in the garden by the Sakai clan lord. Renowned for its seasonal beauty, Tsurumaien is particularly stunning in spring with cherry blossoms and in autumn with vibrant foliage. Amenities include a teahouse, shops, and a cafe, allowing visitors to leisurely explore the grounds.
