Shiroishi Castle, where Katakura Kojuro Kagenaga, a retainer of Date Masamune, served as lord. Step back in time and experience the atmosphere of a samurai as you explore the reconstructed wooden keep and the main gate!
Shiroishi Castle is a Japanese castle (hirayama-jo, a castle built on a flat hilltop) located in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. It's also known as Masuoka Castle. The castle is designated as a Shiroishi City historical site. Traditionally, it's said that during the medieval period, it was the residence of the Shiroishi clan (Karita clan). The castle lord changed several times during the late Sengoku period, and in the Edo period, it became the castle of the Katakura clan, retainers of the Sendai Domain. Along with Yatsushiro Castle in Kyushu and others, it was exempt from the Edo shogunate's 'one castle per domain' policy and survived until the Meiji Restoration. The current three-story keep and gate were reconstructed in 1995 (Heisei 7). It's also selected as one of the Continued Japan's 100 Famous Castles (number 105). Shiroishi Castle boasts a rich history, with Katakura Kojuro Kagenaga, a retainer of Date Masamune, serving as its lord. In the Edo period, it played a crucial role as the southern stronghold of the Sendai Domain. While dismantled in the Meiji era, the keep and main gate were faithfully reconstructed in 1995 (Heisei 7). The reconstructed keep is a wooden structure, allowing visitors to appreciate the craftsmanship and technology of that time. A historical museum within the castle grounds displays materials related to the history of Shiroishi Castle and the Katakura family.
