Experience the grandeur of Date Masamune at the Sendai Castle Ruins.
Overview
Sendai Castle, built in 1601 by Date Masamune, flourished as the castle of the Sendai Domain. Situated on a hill approximately 130 meters above sea level, its strategic location, with cliffs protecting the east and south, earned it the name "Aoba Castle." Intentionally, no central keep was built to avoid attracting the attention of Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa. While the main keep is gone, the remaining stone walls and a reconstructed secondary tower offer a glimpse into its former magnificence. From the castle ruins, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Sendai city and the Pacific Ocean. Now developed as Aoba Castle Park, it's a beloved green space for Sendai residents. Cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage draw many visitors throughout the year. Visit the Sendai Castle Ruins and feel the presence of the powerful Date Masamune.
Take the Sendai City Loop Bus (Rūpuru Sendai) from Bus Stop No. 15-3 at JR Sendai Station West Exit. It's about a 22-minute ride to the "Sendai Castle Ruins" stop, followed by a 3-minute walk.
Alternatively, take the Sendai Subway Tozai Line to Kokusai Center Station and walk for 25 minutes.
Paid parking is available at the main keep (150 regular cars, ¥400/hour; tour buses, ¥1200/hour; motorcycles, ¥100/day). Parking is free after 6 PM. Show route
