A shrine built by the Date clan, lords of the Sendai Domain, to demonstrate their loyalty to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Sendai Toshogu Shrine is a shrine founded in 1654 by Date Tadazune, the second lord of the Sendai Domain. It is believed to have been built to show the loyalty of the Date clan, the rulers of the Sendai Domain, to the Tokugawa shogunate by enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu. Sendai Toshogu Shrine is a must-see for history buffs, boasting historical structures such as the Zuishinmon gate and the Karamon gate, both designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The Zuishinmon gate, a two-storied gate with Zuishin statues on either side, is particularly striking with its large roof visible from afar. The Karamon gate features exquisite carvings depicting the mythical creatures karashishi (Chinese lion), houou (phoenix), and kirin. The shrine is also known as a beautiful cherry blossom spot, with approximately 80 cherry trees blooming spectacularly in spring, transforming the grounds into a breathtaking pink wonderland. Furthermore, Sendai Toshogu Shrine is associated with Date Masamune. A location within the grounds is said to be where Masamune guided Ieyasu and they rested together.
