Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain, built in 1637. The current buildings are reconstructions completed in 1979 after the originals were destroyed in wartime. Zuihoden is a lavish Momoyama-style mausoleum, boasting exquisite and colorful carvings and decorations. The carvings on the front, in particular, celebrate Masamune's achievements, and their intricate craftsmanship and artistry are truly awe-inspiring. Within the Zuihoden grounds are also "Kansen-den" and "Zenou-den," the mausoleums of the second and third lords, Date Tadazumi and Date Tadamune respectively; these are also impressive structures. A museum on the grounds displays artifacts from archaeological investigations, offering insights into the life of Date Masamune and the history of the Sendai Domain. Zuihoden is a precious place to experience the history and culture of the Sendai Domain. Many sites associated with Date Masamune are nearby, making it an ideal tourist hub. For example, Sendai Castle Ruins, a 15-minute walk from Zuihoden, features remaining structures such as the keep's foundations, built by Date Masamune. Zuiganji Temple, a 10-minute drive from Zuihoden, was Date Masamune's family temple and is designated an Important Cultural Property. The area around Zuihoden also has plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops, making it a convenient stop on your sightseeing journey.
