Hoonji Temple

Overview

Hoonji Temple is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. Tradition holds that it was founded in 1362 by Minami Moriyuki, with the opening ceremony conducted by Tsuyama Chotetsu, and initially built in Mutsu Province, Mino County. It was later relocated to its current location in 1601 when the 27th head of the Nanbu family, Nanbu Toshinao, moved to Morioka. During the Edo period, it served as the head temple for the surrounding region. Hoonji Temple is famous for its Five Hundred Arhats statues. The Arhat Hall houses 500 statues, each with a unique expression, making them endlessly fascinating to observe. These Arhats represent individuals who dedicated themselves to spreading the Buddha's teachings, and you can sense the stories embedded in each statue.
