A historic shrine guarding the kimon (north-east corner, considered unlucky) of Morioka Castle, it's also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in spring.
Sakurayama Shrine, located in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, was founded in 1633 as a guardian shrine for the kimon (the northeast, considered an unlucky direction) of Morioka Castle. It served as the clan shrine for the Nanbu clan, the lords of Morioka, and has been cherished by the local people for generations. In spring, Sakurayama Shrine is renowned for its breathtaking cherry blossoms. The grounds are filled with various cherry trees, including Someiyoshino and Yamazakura, creating a vibrant spectacle of blossoms from early to mid-April. Nighttime illuminations during the cherry blossom season transform the scene into a magical, otherworldly experience. The shrine also offers a glimpse into the history of Morioka Castle. Sections of the castle's stone walls remain within the shrine grounds, allowing visitors to imagine the grandeur of the castle. Furthermore, Morioka Castle Ruins Park is located nearby, featuring a replica model of Morioka Castle and a museum. Sakurayama Shrine is a tranquil and serene place where history and nature harmoniously coexist. It attracts many visitors throughout the year, but particularly during cherry blossom season. If you're visiting Morioka, be sure to stop by.
