The grounds are extensive and there's a parking lot available. However, the parking lot can be a little tricky to find, so we recommend checking a map or images beforehand. You can obtain a Goshuin (temple seal) by picking it up from the priest's residence along the approach to the shrine. It seems to also double as a place to receive these.
Kiryu Tenmangu Shrine, located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane. While its founding date is unknown, it's believed to have been moved to its present location in the early Edo period. In 2023, the main hall (honden), offering hall (haiden), worship hall (haiden), and the Kasuga-sha sub-shrine were designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, making it a noteworthy destination steeped in history and culture. Famous as the shrine of the god of learning, it's bustling with visitors during exam seasons. The grounds feature historically significant structures and a lush garden, offering beautiful scenery throughout the year. Spring's cherry blossoms and autumn's vibrant foliage are particularly stunning, attracting many tourists. The surrounding area boasts well-preserved old streets, trendy cafes, and shops, making it a full-day destination. Kiryu Tenmangu Shrine offers a rich blend of history, culture, nature, and culinary delights. Be sure to visit!
