The Kiryu Shinmachi Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings is a nationally designated preservation district located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. Textile factories, townhouses, and storehouses built from the Edo period to the early Showa period line the streets, creating a historically rich atmosphere. Once famed as "Kiryu, the loom center of Japan," this area is a precious testament to Kiryu City's history of prosperity through the textile industry. Many buildings remain that offer a glimpse into the lives of people from that era, making it an enjoyable destination for history buffs and casual visitors alike.
For example, the "Nocogiri-yane factories" (sawtooth roof factories), where thread was once wound and woven, are distinctive for their unique shape. The "former Morita family residence," built in the Meiji period, provides a glimpse into the lives of wealthy merchants of that time. Taking a stroll through the old streets and imagining the bustling activity of the past is also highly recommended.

By Train:
From Shin-Kiryu Station (Tobu Line): Take the Limited Express Ryomo from Asakusa or Kita-Senju. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. From the station, use the Orihime bus or a taxi (about 10 minutes).
From Kiryu Station (JR Ryomo Line, North Exit): Take the Shinkansen (Tohoku, Joetsu, or Hokuriku) from Tokyo to the Ryomo Line (via Oyama Station or Takasaki Station). The journey takes approximately 2 hours. From Takasaki Station, take the Ryomo Line for about 45 minutes. From Oyama Station, take the Ryomo Line for about 55 minutes. From the station, walk (about 15 minutes), or take the Orihime bus or a taxi (about 5 minutes).
By Car:
Kita-Kanto Expressway:
From the Kanto Expressway, exit at Ota-Yabuzuka IC and follow Prefectural Road 68 towards Kiryu (about 15 minutes).
From the Tohoku Expressway, exit at Ota-Kiryu IC and follow National Route 50 towards Kiryu (about 20 minutes).
