Overview

Kasosan Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Kami-kuga, Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, nestled on the 879-meter-high Ishiwareyama mountain. Legend says it was founded in 767 by Shodo Shonin, and it is revered as a god of bountiful harvests, domestic safety, fire prevention, and martial prowess. The shrine grounds offer a tranquil space, featuring moss-covered stone steps and ancient trees. A well-maintained hiking trail leads to the summit of Ishiwareyama, offering a chance to enjoy the surrounding nature. Ishiwareyama mountain once thrived as a sacred site for Shugendo (a syncretic religion combining Buddhism and mountain asceticism), attracting many ascetic monks. Kasosan Shrine, situated on this mountain, has long been a center of faith for the people. Within the grounds stands the 'Senbon Katsura' (Thousand-leaved Japanese Sweetgum), a giant tree believed to be over 1000 years old, whose imposing presence is breathtaking. Furthermore, the view from Ishiwareyama is truly spectacular, offering a panoramic vista of magnificent nature. Kasosan Shrine is a tranquil space embraced by history and nature. It is recommended for those seeking a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
