This shrine, known for its "Japan's Number One Ebisu-sama" statue, is said to bring good fortune and prosperity in business.
Omae Jinja Shrine is a historic shrine located in Mooka City, Tochigi Prefecture, and is designated as a Jinsha within the Engishiki (an ancient Japanese document listing shrines). It has long been affectionately known as "Omae-sama" and "Omae Daigongen," and remains a beloved power spot for local residents. The sacred ground of "Omae" (Osaki), where the Engishiki-listed Omae Jinja Shrine is enshrined, is traditionally known as a "sacred land of the age of the gods" in ancient legends. The name "Omae" originates from its location at the large end of the former "Haganu-numa" (swamp) located north of the shrine grounds, leading to its designation as Omae (Saki) Jinja. The shrine building was reconstructed during the Jingo-Keiun era (767-770 AD), boasting a history of over 1,500 years. During the Heian period, it served as a subsidiary temple of Toei-zan Kuroko Senmyo-ji Temple in Hitachi Province, and the main shrine incorporated elements of Shinto and Buddhism, including Yakushi Nyorai (the Healing Buddha). It is also said that in 935 AD, Taira no Masakado, before launching the Shohei-Tenkyo War, prayed for victory at Omae Jinja Shrine and performed religious practices at the Gokei River's sacred cleansing area. During the medieval period, the Haga clan, the fierce warriors of the Kanto region, built Wakairo Castle east of the main shrine and later Gozen Castle south of it. They served as protectors of Omae Jinja Shrine's lands until the 22nd head of the clan, Haga Juuro Kiyohara Takasada. Within the grounds sits "Japan's Number One Ebisu-sama Omae Ebisu Jinja Shrine," believed to grant good fortune and business prosperity. Also on the grounds is Ashiwoyama Jinja Shrine, a famous biker shrine attracting numerous riders. The main shrine building is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, attesting to its historical significance. Omae Jinja Shrine is also known as a power spot, offering visitors a sense of peace and revitalization. Please take your time to explore and immerse yourself in the history and natural beauty.
