Overview

Kibana Jinja Shrine, located in Yaita City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a historically significant shrine founded in the Kamakura period. According to tradition, it was established by Sakanoe Tamuramaro as a prayer for success in his conquest of the Emishi. Known for being the oldest shrine architecture in Tochigi Prefecture, its main hall and gate, built in the Muromachi period, are designated as National Treasures. The main hall is a three-bay style building with a copper roof, while the gate is a single-bay, gabled-roof structure also with a copper roof; both beautifully preserve the architectural style of their time. The shrine grounds also house numerous precious cultural assets, including a Kongo Yasha Myoo statue (Important Cultural Property) and an iron lantern (Tochigi Prefectural Cultural Property).
