Overview

Sugaru-ga-taki is a 60-meter-high waterfall located in Minamiaso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture, and is proudly listed among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Surrounded by the magnificent Aso Kuju National Park, this waterfall has long inspired awe and reverence, giving rise to many legends. Previously, a path leading to the base of the falls was well-maintained, allowing many to witness its grandeur up close. However, the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake caused significant damage, leading to the closure of the observatory. Through the dedicated efforts of local residents and their strong will to rebuild, the observatory reopened in October 2021 after five and a half years. From the observatory, you can fully appreciate the powerful roar of the cascading water and the surrounding lush greenery. The vibrant colors of spring's fresh foliage and autumn's foliage beautifully enhance the waterfall's beauty, captivating visitors. The walkway leading to the observatory is also a popular walking path, providing an enjoyable nature walk within Aso's stunning landscape. Sugaru-ga-taki is a moving testament to the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. When visiting Aso, make sure to witness the magnificence of this breathtaking waterfall for yourself.
