Soyokyō Gorge

Overview

Soyokyō Gorge is located in Minamioguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, in the upper reaches of the Gokase River. It's a rare U-shaped valley featuring approximately 200-meter-high sheer cliffs extending for 10 kilometers from Kanawatari Falls to Hanagami Dam. This gorge is part of a caldera landscape formed approximately 2 million years ago by a massive eruption of Mount Aso. Over time, the Gokase River carved the valley through erosion. The highlight of Soyokyō Gorge is undoubtedly its magnificent scenery. The cliffs lining the valley are like a panoramic masterpiece of nature. Soyokyō Gorge also offers various attractions such as Kanawatari Falls and Hanagami Dam. Kanawatari Falls is a majestic waterfall approximately 30 meters high, its spray roaring through the surrounding area. Hanagami Dam, located at the downstream end of Soyokyō Gorge, offers stunning views of the Aso Five Mountains from its reservoir. Soyokyō Gorge is also perfect for a scenic drive.
