Aso Nakadake Crater is an iconic symbol of Mount Aso. Formed by a massive eruption approximately 90,000 years ago, the Aso Caldera is one of the largest in the world, stretching 18km east-west and 25km north-south. Nakadake, one of the Aso Five Mountains, sits in the center of this caldera. This still-active crater, with its impressive 4-kilometer circumference, constantly emits plumes of white smoke. At the bottom of the crater is a crater lake, or hot spring, containing sulfur and other mineral-rich waters. Volcanic gases also vent from areas around the crater, allowing you to feel the heat firsthand. Aso Nakadake Crater is a dynamic location where you can truly experience the power of the Earth. Nearby, you'll find the Aso Volcano Museum, offering insights into the history and natural environment of Mount Aso. It’s a place where you can witness the majestic scenery of Mount Aso and experience the raw power of an active volcano.
