The Murata-machi Murata Traditional Buildings Preservation District, located in Murata-machi, Shibata-gun, Miyagi Prefecture, is a merchant town that flourished as a safflower distribution center during the Edo period and later as a cocoon distribution center from the Meiji period onward. You can stroll through its streets and experience a glimpse into the past. Historic buildings are scattered throughout the town, allowing you to imagine the bustling atmosphere of the time. Murata-machi is situated south of Sendai City. Specifically, the Murata area, east of Murata Castle, prospered as a safflower distribution center during the Edo period and as a cocoon distribution center from the Meiji period onwards. Edo-period merchants engaged in active trade with regions like Kamigata (Kyoto-Osaka area), while Meiji-era merchants actively pursued business and land ownership, accumulating significant wealth. East of Murata Castle, roads, residential areas, and waterways are neatly arranged. On both sides of the road running parallel to the Arakawa River on the eastern edge, there are residential blocks designated as "machiya" (traditional townhouses), a portion of which constitutes the preservation district. The narrow, long and rectangular lots, perpendicular to the north-south running streets, remain from that era. The distinctive townscape features alternating shop buildings and gates facing the street, with the shops built using sturdy earth walls (namako-kabe) and the gates adorned with carvings and latticework. Even today, walking through the streets, which retain their historical character, allows you to feel connected to the past. You can delve into the lives and culture of the merchants of that era and reflect on history. The preservation district also includes a historical museum and traditional craft workshops, offering further opportunities to learn about the past. The Murata-machi Murata Traditional Buildings Preservation District is a precious place where you can experience history and culture. Be sure to visit!
