A fascinating spot where you can experience history in the preserved former residence of wealthy Edo-era farmers and merchants, and enjoy a relaxing foot bath.
The Former Horikiri Residence is the former home of the Horikiri family, wealthy farmers and merchants, located in Iizaka-machi, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. The Juuken-gura (ten-bay storehouse), built in 1775 (An'ei 4), is the oldest and largest clay storehouse in the prefecture and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Fukushima City, reflecting its historical significance. It served as a rice storehouse and, at times, a sake brewery. Its scale and sturdy construction speak volumes about the Horikiri family's prosperity. The main house, a modern Japanese-style residence built in 1881 (Meiji 14), offers a glimpse into the Horikiri family's life. The main house has nine rooms, some of which are available for rent as seminar rooms or cooking studios. Adjacent buildings, including the new storehouse, the inner storehouse, and the tool shed, showcase exhibits that illustrate the family's lifestyle and culture. Beyond the historical structures, the Former Horikiri Residence boasts a beautiful garden. The garden, ablaze with seasonal flowers, offers a tranquil escape. A foot-bath fed by the natural hot spring of Iizaka Onsen is also available, allowing visitors to relax in the onsen while enjoying the garden's views.
