Overview

The Former Ikumagawa Residence is an Edo-era Machiya house in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Presumed to have been built in the latter half of the 17th century, it served as the residence of the Ikumagawa family, who held the prestigious position of official purveyors of medicinal herbs to the Numata Domain. The Ikumagawa family, for generations, operated a medicinal herb business, playing a crucial role within the domain. The Former Ikumagawa Residence stands as a priceless record of life in that era. The building, with its gable-roofed, board-covered structure, features tools and furniture on display that offer a glimpse into the daily life of the time. For instance, the 'shimomise,' a space in the corner of the earth floor, served as a storage area for business supplies. The unusually large five-room living area hints at the comfortable life enjoyed by the family. Adjacent to the Former Ikumagawa Residence is the Ikumagawa Memorial Museum. Here, you'll find exhibits showcasing the history and culture of the Ikumagawa family, including their calligraphy, paintings, and everyday household items. The Former Ikumagawa Residence offers a unique opportunity to experience the life of an Edo-era Machiya house. You can learn about the architectural techniques and lifestyles of the time, as well as delve into the history and culture of the Ikumagawa family. Located within Numata Park, you can also enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Be sure to visit!
