Admire the powerful works of Teruko Yokoi in a charming building made from relocated Meiji-era storehouses.
The Teruko Yokoi Hinageshi Art Museum showcases the works of Teruko Yokoi, a Japanese painter based in Switzerland. Opened in 2004 in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, it's registered as a Gifu Prefecture Machikado Museum. The museum building itself is a captivating feature, constructed from two relocated Meiji-era storehouses (itadakura) from Kamitakara Village, Gifu Prefecture (now part of Takayama City). Even the foundation stones were transported, offering a tangible link to the past. The surrounding stone walls utilize stones from Sakiori terraced rice fields in Nakanohata, Ena City, highlighting the use of local materials. Yokoi's powerful, vibrant, and life-affirming artwork deeply moves visitors. Her poppy-themed pieces, in particular, are breathtaking, showcasing vivid colors and bold brushstrokes. In early summer, the museum grounds are ablaze with poppies, creating a stunning landscape. Adjacent to the museum is Enagawa Kamiya, a century-old traditional Japanese confectionery shop, offering a delightful complement to your visit. Enagawa Kamiya even uses Yokoi's artwork in its packaging! Nestled in serene natural surroundings, the Teruko Yokoi Hinageshi Art Museum offers a peaceful retreat. Create lasting memories by immersing yourself in Yokoi's dynamic artwork, the charming Meiji-era storehouse building, and the beauty of the surrounding nature.
