Many buildings from that era, including old sake breweries, inns (ryokan), and wayside stations (wakibonjin), remain along the old road, offering a glimpse into its vibrant past. Notably, an inn still bears marks where members of the Tengu-to (a rebellious samurai group) carved their swords into the pillars during their journey from Mito to Kyoto to oppose Tokugawa Yoshinobu. These marks are a poignant reminder of the tense atmosphere of the time. The well-maintained streets are easy to explore. Take your time strolling through, admiring the old buildings. It’s perfect for history buffs and those seeking a relaxing escape. Traditional shops line Imajo-juku’s streets, offering sake, miso, soy sauce, tofu, pickled plums, and plum juice – a taste of authentic flavors.
