Overview

Kumagawa-juku is a post town located in Wakasa-cho, Mikata-Kamiminochi District, Fukui Prefecture. It was a bustling post town on the old Saba Kaido, connecting Wakasa and Kyoto, during the Edo period. Its charm lies in the well-preserved traditional townscape, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The highlight of Kumagawa-juku is undoubtedly a stroll through its atmospheric streets. Stone-paved paths, white-walled storehouses, and tiled-roof houses line the streets, evoking the ambiance of a former post town. Renovated old houses now house cafes and shops, offering a place to relax and soak in the history and culture. To delve deeper into the history and culture of Kumagawa-juku, the Wakasa Saba Kaido Kumagawa-juku Shiryokan (Museum) is highly recommended. It showcases valuable materials and exhibits on the history of the Saba Kaido and life in Kumagawa-juku. Other renovated merchant houses and homes offer glimpses into the daily lives of past residents. Kumagawa-juku also boasts beautiful seasonal scenery. From cherry blossoms in spring to verdant greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and winter snow, the landscape changes throughout the year. The autumn foliage is particularly stunning, painting the mountains in vibrant reds and yellows. Kumagawa-juku is a captivating town where history, culture, nature, and human warmth harmoniously coexist. Take your time to explore its treasures.
