Nagahama Castle History Museum

Overview

The Nagahama Castle History Museum is located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, on the site of Nagahama Castle, once built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The castle keep, reconstructed in 1983, retains the atmosphere of the original while functioning as a modern museum. The museum houses a rich collection of exhibits on the history of Nagahama Castle, Hideyoshi's related artifacts, and the culture and history of Ōmi Province, allowing visitors to learn about the lives and culture of that era. Nagahama Castle is known as the first castle built by Hideyoshi. Many other warlords, including Hidemasa Hori and Kazutoyo Yamanouchi, both vassals of Oda Nobunaga, served as castle lords after Hideyoshi. The castle was abandoned in 1606, but its history is carried on at the Nagahama Castle History Museum. Next to the museum lies Toyo Park, the former site of Nagahama Castle.
