A breathtaking panoramic view that boasts the best scenery in the San'in region!
Construction of Yonago Castle began around 1591 during the Edo period by the warlord Yoshikawa Hiroie. Later, in 1601, Nakamura Kazutada, who came from Suruga Province, became the lord of the Hoki Province and completed Yonago Castle, making it the most prestigious castle in the San'in region. However, the Nakamura family line ended in 1609. Afterwards, Yonago Castle was entrusted to Arao Naritoshi, a senior retainer of the Tottori clan. In the early Meiji period, it was sold for a paltry sum and subsequently dismantled. Legend says the wood from this once-magnificent castle was used as firewood for bathhouses. Today, only the stone walls of Yonago Castle remain. These impressive stone walls echo the grandeur of this important fortress of the Hoki Province and its status as the most renowned castle in the San'in region. Now, they overlook the city of Yonago, bearing silent witness to its prosperous history. Although the main keep is no longer standing, you can still strongly sense the spirit of this once-great castle. Today, you reach the 90-meter summit by climbing the stone steps via the mountain path from Minatoyama Park. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted with an unparalleled 360-degree panoramic view! To the north, the city of Yonago stretches out before you, and in the distance, the majestic horizon of the Sea of Japan unfolds. To the west lies the brilliant blue of Lake Shinji. To the east, the elegant silhouette of the magnificent Mount Daisen rises in the distance. On a clear day, you might even spot the Oki Islands across the Sea of Japan. Along with Minatoyama Park at the foot of the castle mountain, this scenic spot continues to be beloved by many local citizens. It's also a cherished cherry blossom viewing spot during the blooming season. The cherry blossoms viewed from the castle ruins' summit are even more vibrant against the backdrop of Lake Shinji and Mount Daisen, their beauty and vividness captivating both the eye and the camera. Yonago Castle Ruins is a must-see tourist spot in Tottori Prefecture, offering a delightful blend of history and nature.
