Overview

Tsukiyama Futadō Castle, located in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, is a mountain castle built by the Amago clan during Japan's Sengoku period. Perched atop Mount Tsukiyama at an elevation of 186 meters, it's renowned for its formidable defenses, utilizing a dramatic 100-meter elevation difference in the surrounding cliffs. While lacking a main keep (tenshu), the expansive castle grounds retain numerous features, including encircling walls (kuruwa), stone walls (ishigaki), and moats (hori). The Amago clan, a powerful Sengoku-era daimyō (feudal lord), expanded their influence from their base in western Shimane Prefecture from the late 14th century. Tsukiyama Futadō Castle served as their primary residence for approximately 100 years, from the mid-15th to the late 16th centuries, growing in size and defensive capabilities alongside the clan's power. The castle's defining characteristic is its robust defensive system. The dramatic cliffs, over 100 meters high, were strategically incorporated, along with encircling walls, stone walls, and moats, effectively thwarting enemy advances. The castle also featured wells, reservoirs, and residential areas, making it suitable for prolonged sieges. In 1566, the castle fell to the Mōri clan's assault. Following the Amago clan's subsequent demise, Tsukiyama Futadō Castle was abandoned. However, the castle ruins stand as a testament to its history and grandeur. Today, the Tsukiyama Futadō Castle ruins are designated as a National Historic Site and are open to the public. The site features preserved remains from the period and informative plaques for educational purposes. Offering panoramic views of Yasugi City, the ruins are also a popular spot for their stunning natural beauty and historical significance. When visiting Tsukiyama Futadō Castle, take your time exploring the ruins to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Sengoku period. Consider combining your visit with exploring Yasugi City and other nearby attractions.
