A breathtaking spring spectacle! 60,000 skunk cabbage plants bloom across a 3-hectare alder forest.
Sasamaki Bog, located in Tazawako, Senboku City, Akita Prefecture, is a wetland where approximately 60,000 skunk cabbage plants thrive in a 3-hectare alder forest. From mid-April to early May, the skunk cabbage bursts into bloom, heralding the arrival of spring. Along the boardwalk through the bog, you'll also find the unusual swamp plant, zazen-sou, adding to the springtime atmosphere. Sasamaki Bog is designated by the Ministry of the Environment as an area of significant importance for biodiversity conservation in Satoyama (rural landscapes) and is a valuable site academically. This is due to the vast expanse of flowering wetlands and the presence of the skunk cabbage colony and alder forest in a mountainous area easily accessible from roads and the train station. The "Sasamaki Mizubasho Festival" is held annually, coinciding with the skunk cabbage bloom, featuring local cuisine and specialty product sales. During the festival, the area buzzes with tourists, offering a chance to savor local flavors. Nearby attractions such as Lake Tazawa and Kakunodate are also worth a visit. Sasamaki Bog provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, offering a chance to reconnect with nature and rejuvenate. Enjoy a leisurely stroll, breathing in the fresh air of spring.
